NIGHTCLUBS WILL CLOSE FOR AT LEAST TWO WEEKS IN PORTUGAL

Portugal is closing nightclubs and bars starting this Saturday to control the spread of Covid-19 during the holiday season.

On New Year's Eve, a negative test is required when entering restaurants or parties. However, there is a limit to 10 people attending outdoor meetings.

"This still isn't the normal Christmas we are used to," Prime Minister Antonio Costa told a news conference.

Mr Costa also announced capacity restrictions at shops and said a negative coronavirus test would now be required to stay at hotels.

Portugal has one of the highest vaccination rates in the world, with about 87% of its 10 million people fully vaccinated, but with the rest of Europe it is facing a spike in infections, in part due to the rapidly spreading Omicron, as about 50% of new coronavirus cases in Portugal are associated with the Omicron variant.
