Police may patrol nightclubs and bars in the UK to protect women

Following the abduction and murder of Sarah Everard in South London earlier this month, the government announced a government plan to improve the safety of women. One of the points of this plan is patrolling under the cover police in clubs and bars.

Boris Johnson stated: “Ultimately, we must drive out violence against women and girls and make every part of the criminal justice system work to better protect and defend them.”

The program, called Project Vigilant, was originally launched in 2019 and last year received a Crime Prevention Award from the International Association of Chiefs of Police. It aims to involve plainclothes officers visiting the areas around clubs and bars. The amendments include doubling the fund for safer streets to £ 45 million, which will be used to provide neighborhoods with improved street lighting and video surveillance.
